Mascot Booming As Sydney’S Buzz Shifts From Inner West


The suburb of Mascot, in Sydney’s inner south-east, continues to develop in strides as a residential, retail and hotel hub with the news that prestigious apartment developer Meriton Group will build one of the area’s most ambitious projects to date.

Mascot Central, a contemporary apartment, accommodation and retail complex at 19-33 Kent Road, was designed by PTW Architects and is a welcome addition to the once-industrial area.

Just seven kilometres from Sydney’s CBD, a stone’s throw from public transport and en route to the airport, Mascot has become a bustling epicentre of urban life thanks to a mini baby boom in Sydney’s inner city and an influx of affordable housing in the inner south. New restaurants and cafes, and an extensive network of bicycle paths for commuters, have also emerged in recent years. A flow-on effect from the popularity of neighbouring Meriton developments in Rosebery, Waterloo and Zetland has seen an increase in families and young people moving to the area.

Meriton is the first developer in Mascot to create a planned community offering residents every possible convenience. Mascot Central will offer more than 1,000 residential apartments within eight buildings which range in height up to 14 levels, alongside 255 fully serviced apartments and a neighbourhood shopping centre. One-bedroom, two-bedroom and studio apartments will cater for families, couples and single-person households with generous floor space, light-filled living areas and car parking, while the serviced apartments will provide valuable proximity to the airport and city for holiday makers and business travellers alike.

Enhancing the community atmosphere, the complex will house a Woolworths supermarket, a childcare centre and 15 specialty stores currently being leased, along a pedestrianised retail strip. A 25-metre lap pool, children’s pool, spa and sauna are planned as well as a well-equipped gymnasium. In addition to the childcare centre, a children’s playground is set to make the complex a place of respite and fun for parents and families.

The Kent Road site was acquired by Meriton Group for $100 million in March 2013. Meriton is planning further apartments in Mascot alongside development projects in Waterloo, Ryde, North Sydney, Chatswood, Pagewood and Warriewood.
